How does the scheme operate?
Collections will take place on sites throughout the County. You no longer need to be a member of the CFN to use the recycling scheme, however members do get a refund to the value of £2 per liner at the year end. Farmer members will be advised of the collection schedule via mailshot. Collection sites and dates will also be publicised in auction marts and various agricultural merchants.

What are the storage guidelines?
All materials need to be as clean and dry as possible with minimal contamination which includes water, debris, stones etc. as there will be an extra charge if the plastic has to be taken to landfill. The more farmers cooperate ; the easier it is for us to keep costs to a minimum.

What is the cost to the farmer?
Filled liners are charged at £17.50 each to cover disposal and recycling costs etc. There is a penalty to pay for plastics which have not been stored correctly in accordance with the guidelines.

|
When and where do the collections take place?
The CFN members are informed by post of collection site details. Collection sites are all over the County and take place at auction marts, car parks, feed merchants, agricultural suppliers and farmyards etc.
Collections take place twice a year 1 during January/February and June.
Collections take place on specified days only. If these dates and venues are not convenient, the Farmer Network will help you organise a local collection (or min-hub) where and when you want it, provided you can work with neighbours to collect at least 20 liners. Solway will collect direct off farm at an increased price.

Why should farmers use the scheme? You will be issued with a waste transfer note at the collection site when you have paid for recycling your plastic. This is documentation required for proof of responsible disposal and is in accordance with the current Waste Management Controls, now extended to Agriculture. This means that it is now illegal to burn or bury waste.

Storage bags & bins
Plastics must be stored in plastic liners. It is important for farmers to practice correct storage methods by keeping materials free from water and debris, this helps to reduce the scheme’s costs and thereby the charge to the farmer. For 2008 you will be expected to use liners bought from Solway recycling or you can use any Farmer Network liners that are in stock.
Liners are best stored in bins. This enables you to keep them clean and tidy and allows you to get more plastic in each liner. Bins are sold by Solway Recycling but many farmers make their own, an example can be seen in the photograph:
You can buy CFN liners from:
Carr’s Cockermouth,
Carleton Hall Farm Shop, Penrith
Or contact the office 01768 868615
